Living in a nuclear family of Malayali descent in Bengaluru, actor Sruthi Hariharan makes it a priority to uphold their traditions. She cherishes celebrating occasions such as Onam, even if it's just with her husband, Raam Kumar, and their daughter, Janki. Recalling her childhood memories of attending Onam festivities at the East Cultural Association, Sruthi expresses her love for the traditional Onam feast, particularly enjoying dishes like payasam, aviyal, and sharkara upperi. With a passion for sustainability, she appreciates the zero-waste concept behind dishes like aviyal. Since marrying into a Malayali family, Sruthi has embraced Onam celebrations more wholeheartedly. She and her husband, Raam, ensure to pass down their cultural values to their daughter, Janki, who eagerly participates in the festivities such as making pookalam (flower rangoli) and learning elements of Kaikottikali, a Kerala folk dance. Despite being a nuclear family in an urban setting, they make a conscious effort to preserve their cultural heritage."We strive to keep our daughter connected to our traditions and culture, as it is important to us. However, as she grows older, the decision to continue with these traditions will be hers. Our aim is to introduce her to the customs we grew up with. Despite living away from Kerala, it is crucial to Sruthi that her daughter remains true to her roots. While it will ultimately be Janki's choice whether to carry on these traditions, Sruthi's focus is on sharing their heritage with her. For Sruthi, the enjoyment of preparing a sadhya at home lies in creating a special meal for loved ones and sharing in the true essence of Onam - celebrating with those closest to you."
